My first Cupcake Files post featured the first cupcakery I fell in love with in New York. This time, I'm sharing my love for Butter Lane, my favorite cupcake in the East Village. Butter Lane, co-owned by both the executive producer of Food Network's Chopped and the managing editor of Food Network Magazine, focuses on using pure ingredients to make "cupcakes for grownups." Customers have the opportunity to mix and match Butter Lane's moist cake with a variety of French or American buttercreams. When you walk into the tiny shop, a chalkboard spanning the side wall announces the daily frosting flavors. If your chosen combination is already frosted, your cupcake is pulled out of the case. If not, no problem. An employee will ice a fresh cupcake with your chosen frosting. While Butter Lane's cupcakes boast a prestigious fan base, including Martha Stewart, its cupcake classes are just as popular. In fact, attending one should be on my 25 Before 25 list. Butter Lane assures novice bakers that its two-hour classes aren't "hardcore," but you will learn to bake and decorate three varieties in one session. Far away and wishing you could attend? Here's a recipe to try at home. Butter Lane has a second location in Brooklyn...but if you don't want to leave your apartment to visit either, just order on Seamless to have them delivered to your door.
What Experts Say
"This tiny, sweet-smelling cupcake shop stresses grown-up flavors and high-quality ingredients over splashy colors and kitschy names...Unlike the majority of its competitors, which venture into puddings, brownies, and bars, Butter Lane sticks exclusively to cupcakes, keeping its small staff busy frosting freshly baked batches just behind the counter." -New York Magazine
